This 3-hour workshop provides nonprofit leaders with the knowledge and tools to confidently navigate IRS Form 990s and financial audits. Participants will gain a clear understanding of what these reports communicate to stakeholders—including funders, donors, regulators, and the public—and how to use them as tools for strategic oversight and organizational integrity. Through a blend of instruction, real-world examples, and practical exercises, the workshop will demystify the components of the Form 990, highlight key areas that reflect organizational health, and clarify audit requirements based on organizational size, funding sources, and state regulations. Participants will also learn best practices for board review of financial documents and how to identify red flags, improve financial reporting, and enhance transparency. This session is ideal for nonprofit board members, executive directors, finance staff, and development professionals seeking to strengthen their financial literacy and promote organizational accountability. Your Facilitator 
Jana Lewis Harkins, CPA, MBA Jana Lewis Harkins brings a wealth of professional knowledge and experience to the
nonprofit sector and enjoys utilizing her financial and project management expertise to assist
Oklahoma nonprofits. She retired in 2001 after 29+ years with Southwestern Bell / AT&T and
honed her analytical skills in corporate accounting and finance with a local medical device
manufacturing company following her “first retirement.” As Director of Shared Services, she
championed and grew the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits’ Shared Financial Services Program
for five years. For the past six years she has continued her work with OKCNP Shared Services as
a Consulting Accountant.
She obtained her undergraduate degree in accounting from Oklahoma City University and
was conferred an MBA from the University of Dallas Graduate School of Management in Irving,
TX. Ms. Harkins passionately believes in continuous learning and frequently speaks to local
groups on a variety of subjects, including: the importance of voting, lifelong learning, financial
literacy, nonprofit accounting, and living your best life with heart disease.
Ms. Harkins is a member of the AICPA, the Oklahoma Society of CPAs, Leadership
Oklahoma City Alumni Association, Oklahoma City University Alumni Association, and the
American Association of University Women. Additionally, she is a Life Member of the NAACP.
She is a wife, mother, and grandmother and understands that the love of one’s family is
life’s greatest blessing. She and her husband, Clarence, have two adult children, ten
grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren! She is an amateur genealogist, Sudoku & Wordle
enthusiast, rarely passes on a road trip, and will drive a hundred miles out of the way to ride a
classic wood carousel!
